Signature Verification

Looking for a notary? You’re in the right place. Stará Vajnorská 8, in the Hastex building

Certification of legally significant facts and authentication of signatures on documents and instruments is one of the notarial acts that virtually everyone encounters. There are many documents for which the law requires signature certification (legalisation).

Signature authentication is one of the traditional notarial acts. In legal literature, a signature is understood as individual strokes of writing that serve to confirm identity. At the same time, it is a unique expression of a specific person’s will in relation to the content of the document being signed. Symbols such as +++ cannot be regarded as a signature and therefore cannot be legalised either.

Signature authentication on instruments and documents may be carried out by ->

1. District Office

2. Notary

Authentication (legalisation) may be carried out in two ways

  • The person signs the instrument in their own hand directly before the notary/official
  • The person declares before the notary/official that they acknowledge the signature on the instrument as their own

To have a signature authenticated, you must prove your identity by presenting an identity card or passport. The authenticity of the signature is indicated on the instrument in the form of an authentication clause. If a particular instrument does not contain all the essential particulars required by law (e.g. information is missing from the instrument), it cannot be legalised. By legalising a signature, the notary does not certify the truth of the statements made in the instrument, but only the signature of the particular person. The notary should also inform the person that no information should be added to or amended in the instrument after authentication has been carried out.

What is the difference between having a document authenticated by a notary and at a district office/registry office?

If you need to have a document authenticated only for use in Slovakia, signature authentication by a notary or at a district office is equivalent. However, if you need to produce the document in relation to a foreign country, it can be authenticated only by a notary.

If you need authentication, you can visit the nearest municipal/city office based on your permanent residence or the nearest notary (you can find notarial offices on the website of the Notarial Chamber of the Slovak Republic
